A review of St Albans Church by John Farrow written on Friday 23rd of October 2020
I joined St Albans Church choir in 1948, 7 years old & became head choirboy in 1952.
I was blessed with a good singing voice easily reaching top "C" & on occasion "D" & "E"
The strain took it's toll & my voice broke dramatically on Christmas Eve 1955 but my deputy Ewart, took over so swiftly, that most of the congregation wasn't aware.
I still have copies of photos taken in the Vicarage Garden of the whole choir & server team with Father Milward (the vicar) at center stage, & Mr. Sims, organist & choirmaster prominent.
I remember well the dedication service when we moved out of the church hall back in to the repaired church building in 1950. We sang, amongst other praise hymns, the "Te Deum". I can't remember the composer & always intended to return one day to see if the choir books were still in the church as computer research has proved negative.
The trees in the gardens were great fun to be climbed, as long as the House Keeper didn't spot you, a lovely but very strict lady.
The huge hanging Crucifix depicting Jesus's sacrifice was a very prominent feature-I wonder if it is still there!
Great days, super people, I was proud to be part of it all..
